Honeymoon, Day 2, Part 1
July 13, 2004
View of Naples on the way up Mt. Vesuvius
We drove part of the way up and then hiked the rest
Where we started the hike; look above Matt's head!
Very, very steep
View of Naples
Resting; it's a long way up!
Made it! Here's what looking down inside it looks like
Steam coming up from the side (it's hard to see)
It's overdue for an eruption, but they have a 30-day notice
We walked around the rim
Matt on the rim of the volcano
Pretty steep on both sides
Erin in a solified-lava cave
Sign for Mt. Vesuvius
Afterwards, we went to a cameo-making factory
Matt now knows what a cameo is
Erin with the wall of purple flowers
We had no idea Pompeii would be so huge!
At the forum, which is the city center
Matt at the forum (you can see our guide)
Erin mocking a statue
Lots of columns everywhere; it was all well-preserved
Mt. Vesuvius looks rather ominous in the background
Erin and Matt at the forum
Very few things are actually shielded from visitors
They used to sacrifice goats here; there were many temples
Most of the people are at the museum in Naples, but here are some
Freaky looking...
This guy was holding a blanket to cover himself
There are lots of brightly-colored frescos everywhere
This is one of the main streets (with Erin eating ice cream)
Large arches like this one were near the city center
This shows how you can just climb on ruins that are 2000 years old
Temple to...Erin!
Matt checking out our city map. The roof behind him is fake
The baths are the most well-preserved part of the city
Atlas holding up the wall in the men's baths
The baths even have roofs - very rare to find
Erin at the baths
This is a bakery - you can see the ovens
At the brothel, where images like this were over the doors
The Temple of Venus is next to the exit (mostly ruins)
