Honeymoon, Day 4 - Rhodes
July 15, 2004
We sailed in at 1:00, so we could see the ship approach Rhodes
Rhodes is a walled city! Very cool
Matt looking at another ship as get cleared to go into Rhodes
The Old Town is surrounded by walls - 40 feet thick in some parts!
Erin with our ship in the background, on the beach at Rhodes
We're making our way towards the gate to enter the walls
This is the main gate that faces the ocean
We went in the Liberty Gate and headed towards the ruins...
Erin with the ruins of Temple of Aphrodite (3rd century BC!)
Lots of old buildings...
Walking through the maze of walls on our way to the sites
Archeological Museum, which used to be the Hospital of the Knights
It's a cool-looking building with artifacts resting everywhere
The Knights built the walls in the 1400s; this was their hospital
This statue of Aphrodite used to stand in the ruins (previous photo)
This shows how unmuseum-like this museum was - very casual
This is the Church of Our Lady of the Castle
It is across the street from the Archeological Museum
It's pretty impressive - look how small Erin is!
This is the Street of the Knights
The inns of each nation were here, and they housed the Knights
Palace of the Knights (see a theme here?)
Was accidentally destroyed in 1856 and rebuilt in 1930 for Mussolini
Erin mocking a statue
Stolen mosaics were everywhere, and hard not to walk on
This is a really cool (but sad) bombed-out church; never rebuilt
Matt standing in the famous Square of the Jewish Martyrs
Marketplace shots; there is a big Jewish community here
Shopping district
Matt figures they won't let him bring this on the plane home
Wandering through the maze of streets
We had a beer at a pub so we could watch the Tour de France
