Honeymoon, Day 5 Santorini
July 16, 2004
This is how the island looks from the ocean - so dramatic
You have to either take a cable car to the top or ride on a donkey
This is Santorini's capital, Fira
Santorini is the prettiest place I've ever been. Period.
Everything is built into the side of the cliff
Everything is white with blue roofs
We walked around the rim - it's an old volcano (erupted 4000 yrs ago)
This is someone's house. It has a pool, and it drops off to the ocean
Erin and Matt with the gorgeous view
Very steep...we rode the cable car up
That's our ship wayyyy down there
Matt with an interesting domed-roof
Good shot of Fira. It's not as pretty as Oia, believe it or not
Wandering through Fira - quite confusing
We took the bus to Akrotiri at the south end of the island
These are ruins from when the volcano erupted 4000 years ago
They are still excavating - it was just discovered in 1967
A door! These were by far the oldest ruins we visited
See how the island is half-mooned shaped?
We took a bus back to Fira, en route to the far side you can see
Back in Fira for a few pictures
This is Oia, the prettiest spot on the whole island
You can see Fira behind Matt
We saw a lot of the hotels we were thinking of staying at before...
It drops off right down to the ocean
You can wander down the different staircases
All the churches look like this
So beautiful!
You basically just wander around; everything is a postcard
Erin with Oia
That pink place is the restaurant where we ate lunch
Matt and Oia
Oia
Hard to find an English-speaking person to take our picture
Pretty flowers in Oia
Just gorgeous...
Many of the hotels feature rooms that are carved into the cliffs
You can see the holes where they're building a new hotel
Random blue and white staircase
You're supposed to watch the sunset from the tip of Oia
Matt being artsy - you can see the church in the reflection :)
We ate lunch at the Seagull restaurant - such a view!
Matt had meatballs
Erin had pasta with marinara sauce
Soooo many churches
Doesn't this look like a postcard?
Hotels in Oia
I could seriously live here
A cool church next to the bustop for the Fira bus
There were tons of doorways to nowhere - the steps drop down steeply
See Matt wandering down the steps in Fira?
Exploring the walkways and stairs of Fira
Great shot of the donkey trail - it's very long and steep
Erin and a church in Fira
Another postcard shot - there's our ship
Our ship is docked next to the tiny island in the volcano's center
Matt and a whitewashed church
Matt and Erin with the view, before getting back on our ship
Took this one ourselves!
And this one - trying to be romantic
We walked back down the donkey trail to our ship to save $
